Canvas Print : Abdominal bones, 3-D CT scan
Canvas Prints from Science Photo Library
Abdominal bones, 3-D CT scan
Abdominal bones, coloured 3-D computer tomography (CT) scan. The lower part of the ribcage is in upper frame, with the pelvis in lower frame. They are connected by the spine, which runs down centre. The spine is made up of block-shaped bones called vertebrae. At the base of the pelvis is the bladder (red oval). The bladder is full of urine, which is seen as the patient was given an intravenous contrast medium to highlight structures on an X-ray. The contrast medium is excreted in urine. One kidney is seen at centre right (branched structure). Urine drains from the kidney to the bladder through a ureter. CT scans use X-rays to build up an image of body structures

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a 3-D CT scan of the abdominal bones, providing a vivid and detailed view of the intricate structures within the human body. The upper frame reveals the lower part of the ribcage, while the lower frame displays the pelvis. Connecting these two vital areas is the spine, composed of block-shaped vertebrae that run down its center. In this image, we witness an extraordinary contrast between bone and soft tissue. The red oval at the base of the pelvis represents a full bladder containing urine. To enhance visibility during X-ray imaging, an intravenous contrast medium was administered to highlight various structures within our excretory system. This contrast medium is eventually expelled through urine. Notably visible in this scan is one kidney positioned at center right as a branched structure. Urine flows from this kidney to reach its destination –the bladder– via a ureter. CT scans employ X-rays to construct highly-detailed images of internal body structures with exceptional precision and accuracy. Through false coloring techniques applied to this image, we can better discern different anatomical elements such as bones, organs, and their relationships within our physiological framework. This remarkable print not only exemplifies medical advancements but also serves as an educational tool for understanding skeletal anatomy alongside urinary and spinal systems' interconnections in healthy individuals.
