Ovulation and fertilisation, artwork

Ovulation and fertilisation. Computer artwork of the female reproductive system, showing the development of an ovum (egg, small circle) inside an ovary (oval, centre left) and its subsequent fertilisation. The Graafian follicle (blue, inside ovary) releases its egg at ovulation. The follicle then develops into a corpus luteum (yellow), which secretes progesterone to build up the lining (beige) of the uterus (womb, right), ready for a fertilised egg. The ovum passes through the oviduct (far left) into the fallopian tube (upper left), where it is fertilised by a sperm (black, upper left). It then starts dividing into a cluster of cells (blastocyst, blue), which passes along the fallopian tube to the uterus, where it implants in the uterine lining and

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork from Science Photo Library beautifully captures the intricate process of ovulation and fertilization within the female reproductive system. Against a clean white background, this illustration showcases the various stages involved in creating new life. Starting with an ovum, or egg, nestled inside an ovary at the center left of the image, we witness its release during ovulation. The Graafian follicle, depicted in blue within the ovary, releases this precious egg into the fallopian tube where it eagerly awaits fertilization. Intriguingly portrayed as a black sperm cell entering from above on the left side of the image, fertilization occurs when this sperm successfully penetrates and merges with the awaiting egg. This union sets off a remarkable chain reaction as cell division begins and transforms these two gametes into a cluster of cells known as a blastocyst. The journey continues along the fallopian tube until finally reaching its destination - implantation in the uterine lining. The yellow corpus luteum takes over by secreting progesterone to build up this lining in preparation for potential pregnancy. This artwork serves not only as an educational tool but also as a testament to nature's incredible ability to create life. It reminds us of our own beginnings and highlights just how miraculous each step is within our bodies' reproductive systems.
