Scoliosis spine deformity, X-ray

Scoliosis sideways deformity of the spine of a woman, coloured X-ray. The spine (upper centre) is severely bent. The deformity affected the patients posture, leading to severe erosion of both hip joints (lower left and right). The hip joint at lower left has been replaced by a prosthesis (black). Scoliosis may be due to a congenital abnormality of the vertebrae (spinal bones), a spinal injury or a disease such as poliomyelitis. The disease may start in childhood for no obvious cause, and progresses until growth stops, often causing severe deformity. Treatment is of the underlying cause, or immobilisation of the spine with a brace or by spinal fusion

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the complexity and severity of scoliosis, a sideways deformity of the spine. The image showcases a colored X-ray of a woman's spine, revealing an extreme bend in the upper center region. This deformity has not only affected her posture but also led to significant erosion in both hip joints, as evident from the lower left and right corners. To alleviate her pain and restore mobility, one of her hip joints has been replaced with a black prosthesis. Scoliosis can arise from various causes such as congenital abnormalities in vertebrae, spinal injuries, or diseases like poliomyelitis. It often manifests during childhood without any apparent trigger and progressively worsens until growth ceases. The resulting deformities can be severe and life-altering for individuals afflicted by this condition. Treatment options include addressing the underlying cause or immobilizing the spine using braces or spinal fusion techniques. This thought-provoking image serves as a reminder of the intricate nature of musculoskeletal disorders like scoliosis and highlights the importance of early diagnosis and intervention. Through medical advancements such as prosthetics and joint replacements, healthcare professionals strive to improve patients' quality of life while managing these challenging conditions effectively.
