Cell types, artwork

Cell types. Cutaway artwork with a scale bar (upper right, in micrometres) showing the relative sizes of eukaryotic cells (those containing a nucleus) and prokaryotic cells (those lacking a nucleus). The eukaryotic cells are larger, and are a plant cell (left) and an animal cell (lower right). The main difference is the presence of a cell wall (brown) and chloroplasts (green) in the plant cell. The cell nucleus is red. The two smaller prokaryotic cells (both at upper right) are bacteria and are gram-negative (left) and gram-positive (right), with the latter having extra cell membranes. The gram-negative bacterium and the animal cell have flagella

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate world of cell types. Through a cutaway artwork, we are presented with a visual representation of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, highlighting their contrasting features. The scale bar in the upper right corner provides us with a sense of size, measured in micrometres. On the left side, we observe a plant cell, distinguished by its larger size compared to other cells depicted. Its defining characteristics include a prominent cell wall colored in brown and chloroplasts painted in vibrant green. These unique attributes enable plants to carry out photosynthesis efficiently. In the lower right corner lies an animal cell, slightly smaller than its plant counterpart but still significantly larger than prokaryotic cells. The red nucleus stands out as the central control center within this complex structure. Additionally, both the animal cell and one of the two smaller prokaryotic cells located at the upper right possess flagella – whip-like appendages that aid in movement. Speaking of prokaryotes, these microscopic organisms lacking nuclei are represented by gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria on either side of our artwork. While they share similarities such as small size and absence of membrane-bound organelles like mitochondria or endoplasmic reticulum, there is an intriguing distinction between them: extra cell membranes present in gram-positive bacteria. This visually stunning print not only serves as an artistic masterpiece but also offers valuable insights into cellular biology and bacteriology through its detailed depiction of various organelles and structures found within different types of cells.
