Healthy small intestine, barium enema
Healthy small intestine, coloured contrast barium enema X-ray. This X-ray of the abdomen shows a healthy coiled small intestine (centre and upper centre), part of the colon (to its immediate left) and the surrounding pelvic bone. The small intestine breaks down and absorbs partially-digested food from the stomach, before passing it on to the large intestine (colon), where excess water is absorbed. The banding within the small intestine is caused by circular folds, called plicae circulares, in its mucosal lining. The folds increase the surface area through which nutrients can be absorbed. The radio-opaque barium, introduced through an enema, enables the shape of the soft tissues of the small intestine to be seen

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a vibrant and healthy small intestine, captured through a coloured contrast barium enema X-ray. The image reveals the intricate details of the abdomen, with the focal point being the coiled small intestine positioned at the center and upper center. Adjacent to it lies a portion of the colon, while the surrounding pelvic bone adds context to this anatomical marvel. The small intestine plays a crucial role in our digestive system as it diligently breaks down and absorbs partially-digested food from the stomach before passing it on to the large intestine or colon for further processing. Within its mucosal lining, circular folds known as plicae circulares create distinct banding patterns that enhance nutrient absorption by increasing surface area. To capture this remarkable image, radio-opaque barium was introduced into the body via an enema, allowing soft tissues within the small intestine to be clearly visualized. This false-colored representation provides invaluable insights for medical professionals involved in diagnosis and understanding normal gastrointestinal function. As we delve into this mesmerizing snapshot of human biology, we are reminded of both our intricate anatomy and our body's incredible ability to carry out complex processes like digestion.
