Antique Framed Print : Nerve fibre node, TEM
Framed Photos from Science Photo Library
Nerve fibre node, TEM
Nerve fibre node. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a cross-section through a nerve fibre (axon) at a node of Ranvier. The axon (blue) is surrounded by a fatty insulating sheath of myelin (green), which increases the speed of the nerve signal. Nodes of Ranvier are areas of exposed axon, with a high concentration of sodium channels. Instead of travelling continuously along the length of the axon, the impulse jumps between these nodes in a process called saltatory conduction. This allows the impulse to travel over long distances

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a nerve fibre node in all its intricate glory. The image, captured using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), reveals the fascinating inner workings of our nervous system. In this cross-section of a nerve fibre, we can observe the axon, depicted in a striking blue hue, enveloped by a protective sheath of myelin colored green. The myelin sheath plays an essential role in increasing the speed at which nerve signals travel through our bodies. Acting as insulation, it allows for efficient communication between different parts of our anatomy. However, what makes this particular image even more intriguing is the presence of nodes of Ranvier along the axon. These nodes are areas where the axon is exposed and contain high concentrations of sodium channels. They play a crucial role in facilitating saltatory conduction - an extraordinary process where impulses jump between these nodes rather than traveling continuously along the length of the axon. This mechanism enables rapid signal transmission over long distances within our nervous system. As we delve into this mesmerizing photograph, we gain insight into both the complexity and elegance that underlie human biology. It serves as a reminder that beneath our skin lies an intricate network responsible for transmitting information throughout our body – allowing us to experience sensations and interact with our environment on a daily basis.
