Intestinal villi, SEM
Intestinal villi. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a part of the small intestine, showing the villi that cover its inner surface. Villi are finger-like projections that line the surface of the small intestine and increase the surface area available for the absorption of nutrients from digested food. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of intestinal villi, revealing a mesmerizing world hidden within our bodies. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are granted a close-up view of a section through the small intestine, where these finger-like projections cover its inner surface. The vibrant colours against the black background bring to life the complexity and vitality of this essential biological structure. These villi play a crucial role in our digestive system by increasing the surface area available for nutrient absorption from digested food. As we marvel at their delicate yet resilient nature, it becomes evident that they are key players in maintaining our overall health. With a magnification of x35 when printed 10 centimetres wide, every minute detail is brought into focus. The image allows us to appreciate the fine architecture of these villi, composed mainly of epithelial cells that form an absorptive lining along the small intestine's lumen. Steve Gschmeissner's expertise with scanning electron microscopy has beautifully captured this snapshot of human anatomy. This photograph serves as a reminder of how intricately designed our bodies are and highlights the wonders that lie beneath our skin.
