Giardia protozoan, TEM

Giardia protozoan. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a Giardia sp. protozoan. It is a single-celled organism that has two cell nuclei (green). It has flagella (tails, one sectioned at centre left) for movement. It is an intestinal parasite, and it attaches to the intestinal lining using its attachment disc. This is seen as a brush of comb-like cilia (yellow, right-hand side of cell). This parasite can cause diarrhoea in humans. Infection is normally through ingestion of contaminated food or water. Magnification: x9400 when printed 10cm high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate world of Giardia protozoan. In this coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM), we are granted a glimpse into the fascinating life of this single-celled organism. With its two distinct cell nuclei highlighted in vibrant green, it immediately captures our attention. The presence of flagella, visible as tails sectioned at the center left, reveals how this microscopic creature propels itself through its environment. As an intestinal parasite, Giardia attaches itself to the lining using its unique attachment disc, which is beautifully depicted as a brush of comb-like cilia on the right-hand side of the cell. It is crucial to note that while visually stunning, this parasite can cause significant health issues such as diarrhea in humans. Infection typically occurs through ingesting contaminated food or water sources. With a magnification level of x9400 when printed 10cm high, every detail within this image comes alive and invites us to explore further into the realm of nature's hidden wonders. This photograph serves as a reminder that even within seemingly invisible realms lie extraordinary organisms with remarkable adaptations for survival.
