Rhabdovirus, TEM

Rhabdovirus. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of particles of the rhabdovirus vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV). These particles bullet shape is characteristic of rhabdoviruses. Each particle consists of a ribonucleic acid (RNA) core surrounded by a protein coat (capsid). VSV is an arbovirus (arthropod-borne virus), which it is transmitted to domesticated animals and humans through the bite of an infected insect. Animals develop a fever and lesions on their lips, noses, feet and udders, and humans develop an influenza-like illness characterised by fever, headache, muscular aches and mouth blisters

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of viruses, specifically the Rhabdovirus. Captured using a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), this image reveals particles of the rhabdovirus vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV). The distinct bullet shape displayed by these particles is a defining characteristic of rhabdoviruses. Each particle within this mesmerizing print consists of a core made up of ribonucleic acid (RNA) surrounded by a protective protein coat known as a capsid. VSV belongs to the arbovirus family, meaning it is transmitted through infected insects to both domesticated animals and humans. The consequences of infection vary between hosts. Animals experience fever and develop lesions on their lips, noses, feet, and udders. On the other hand, humans suffer from an influenza-like illness characterized by symptoms such as fever, headache, muscular aches, and mouth blisters. This stunning photograph not only highlights the beauty found within biology but also serves as an important tool in understanding infectious diseases. Its vibrant colors bring attention to key elements such as genetic material (RNA), vectors responsible for transmission (arthropods), and various aspects related to virology. Provided by Science Photo Library without any commercial intentions or affiliations with specific companies or products; this image offers valuable insights into pathogenic microorganisms while emphasizing their impact on both human and animal health.
