Pulmonary nerve plexus, 1825 artwork
Pulmonary nerve plexus. View from behind, with the thoracic spine removed, of the posterior pulmonary plexus, a confluence of nerves (white) that includes branches from the pneumogastric nerve (vagus nerve, cranial nerve X). This plexus innervates the lungs (also shown) and their membranes. This anatomical artwork is plate 188 from volume 3 of Manuel d anatomie descriptive du corps humain (1825). This 5-volume anatomy atlas was produced by French physician and surgeon Jules Germain Cloquet (1790-1883). The illustrations were by Haincelin. Volume 3 illustrated the anatomy of the human nervous system

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the Pulmonary nerve plexus, an essential network of nerves responsible for innervating the lungs and their membranes. The artwork, created in 1825 by French physician and surgeon Jules Germain Cloquet, offers a remarkable view from behind with the thoracic spine removed. The posterior pulmonary plexus is depicted as a confluence of delicate white nerves, including branches from the pneumogastric nerve (vagus nerve, cranial nerve X). This historical illustration provides valuable insights into the anatomy of the human nervous system during that era. Volume 3 of Manuel d'anatomie descriptive du corps humain serves as a comprehensive guide to understanding this complex neural structure. Produced by Cloquet himself and illustrated by Haincelin, this five-volume anatomy atlas remains an invaluable resource in medical education. The image not only highlights the scientific significance but also exudes artistic charm with its meticulous attention to detail. It transports us back to a time when dissection was at its peak for anatomical study purposes. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing piece of history, we are reminded of our own intricate design and how vital these neural connections are for our respiratory system's proper functioning. This artwork stands as a testament to both medical progress and artistic expression within scientific exploration.
