Horsetail stem, light micrograph. Transverse section through the top of the stem of the great horsetail (Equisetum telmateia). The scale-like leaves (sheaths) surrounding the stem are made up of a central vascular bundle surrounded by photosynthetic cells and an outer epidermis layer. The central young stem shows an outer cortex surrounding a ring of thirteen central vascular bundles (black-blue). At the center of the stem is parenchyma tissue forming the pith. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres wide
