Foetal brain development, artwork
Foetal brain development, artwork. During the 4th week (upper left) the neural tube begins to differentiate into a spinal cord (green), forebrain (blue), midbrain (grey) and hindbrain (orange). These areas continue to develop over the 5th week (top). During the 6th week (upper right) the forebrain differentiates into the telencephalon (pink) and diencephalon (yellow). The telencephalon develops into the hippocampus, basal ganglia, amygdala and the cerebral cortex. The diencephalon develops into the thalamus and hypothalamus. By the 8th week (lower right) the cerebral hemispheres (pink) have formed and the brain is growing rapidly. By the 15th week (lower left) the cerebellum (upper orange area) and medulla oblongata (lower orange area) have formed from the hindbrain

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the intricate process of foetal brain development, offering a glimpse into the remarkable journey of life within the womb. Against a striking black background, this print highlights the various stages of growth and differentiation that occur during early embryonic development. In the upper left corner, we witness the neural tube beginning to transform into distinct regions: spinal cord in vibrant green, forebrain in serene blue, midbrain in subtle grey, and hindbrain in warm orange hues. As we move to the top section depicting week five, these areas continue their intricate development. The upper right corner reveals an awe-inspiring transformation as the forebrain differentiates into two vital components: telencephalon portrayed by delicate pink shades and diencephalon depicted with gentle yellow tones. The telencephalon evolves further to form essential structures such as hippocampus, basal ganglia, amygdala, and cerebral cortex; while diencephalon gives rise to thalamus and hypothalamus. By week eight shown at lower right portion of this print, we observe rapid growth with fully formed cerebral hemispheres showcased elegantly in pink hues. Finally reaching week fifteen displayed at lower left corner unveils two significant developments from hindbrain – cerebellum represented by an upper orange area and medulla oblongata illustrated through a lower orange region. This stunning artwork not only captures the beauty of human anatomy but also serves as a testament to our incredible capacity for growth and potential. It is a visual reminder of how every individual begins their journey with immense complexity already unfolding within them.
