Malaria ookinete, TEM

Malaria parasite. Image 5 of 10. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a sexual malaria ookinete in a mosquito gut wall. The ookinete (blue, Plasmodium sp.) is penetrating the gut (lower frame) of the mosquito (Anopheles sp.). This stage occurs after the sexual gametes, formed after the parasites are ingested by a feeding mosquito, fuse. The ookinete forms an oocyst in the wall, in which sporozoites, which infect humans, grow. Malaria later invades human red blood cells, causing fevers and anaemia. Magnification unknown. For the complete malaria parasite life cycle, see images M210/207-216

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a malaria parasite known as the ookinete. In this image, we witness the remarkable moment when the ookinete, represented in blue and belonging to the Plasmodium species, penetrates the gut wall of a mosquito from the Anopheles genus. The ookinete stage occurs after sexual gametes are formed following ingestion by a feeding mosquito. Once fused, the ookinete establishes an oocyst within the gut wall where sporozoites develop. These sporozoites are responsible for infecting humans and causing malaria, which manifests as fevers and anaemia upon invading red blood cells. While magnification details remain unknown, this photograph offers us an extraordinary glimpse into one crucial step of the complex life cycle of malaria parasites. It serves as a reminder that mosquitoes act as vectors for transmitting this pathogenic microorganism to humans. With its vibrant colours and intricate details captured through TEM technology, this image not only fascinates those interested in biology and medicine but also highlights both the infectious nature of malaria and its impact on global health. Through scientific exploration like this, we gain valuable insights into disease-causing pathogens such as Plasmodium sp. , ultimately paving the way for improved prevention strategies and treatments in our ongoing battle against malaria.
