Euglena gracilis, SEM
Euglena gracilis protists. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Euglena gracilis protists. These organisms possess a unique combination of plant and animal characters. Like the algae, E. gracilis is photosynthetic, possessing the pigments chlorophyll a and b. It uses these to capture light energy from the Sun, with which it synthesises food in the same way as many plants. It is also, like many protozoa, an active swimmer, moving rapidly by beating its long, whip-like flagellum. E. gracilis is therefore considered to be both an alga and a protozoa and is classified accordingly. Magnification: x1520 at 6x7cm size

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of Euglena gracilis, a unique organism that possesses both plant and animal characteristics. Under the lens of a scanning electron microscope (SEM), this coloured image reveals the mesmerizing details of these protists. Euglena gracilis is an extraordinary creature that combines features found in algae and protozoa. Like algae, it harnesses sunlight through its pigments chlorophyll a and b, engaging in photosynthesis to produce food just like many plants do. However, it also shares traits with protozoa as an active swimmer, propelling itself forward by swiftly beating its long whip-like flagellum. Due to this dual nature, E. gracilis is classified as both an alga and a protozoan. Its classification reflects its ability to thrive in aquatic environments while exhibiting motility characteristic of many single-celled organisms. At a magnification of x1520 on a 6x7cm scale, this SEM image allows us to appreciate the intricacy of E. gracilis' cellular structure and observe its flagella in action. The vibrant colors highlight the vitality and diversity present within our natural world. This stunning photograph from Science Photo Library serves as a reminder of the remarkable complexity found even within seemingly simple organisms like Euglena gracilis. It invites us to marvel at nature's ingenuity while deepening our understanding of life's diverse forms thriving beneath the surface of freshwater ecosystems.
