Euglena protozoan, SEM

Euglena protozoan (Euglena sp.), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This protozoan is described as flagellate because it has a flagellum (thin tail-like structure, lower centre) that is waved to move it through the surrounding liquid. Protozoa are single-celled (unicellular) micro- organisms that are eukaryotes, meaning they have a cell nucleus. Euglena is photosynthetic, so it uses the energy of sunlight to synthesise food. An eyespot at the front of the cell is sensitive to light, allowing it to move towards sunlight. It can also feed on other micro-organisms. Euglena protozoa vary in length from 50-100 micrometres (millionths of a metre)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a Euglena protozoan, captured using a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The Euglena sp. is classified as a flagellate due to its possession of a slender tail-like structure called a flagellum, which it gracefully waves to navigate through its liquid environment. As a single-celled organism, this microbe belongs to the fascinating world of unicellular eukaryotes and possesses a cell nucleus. What sets the Euglena apart is its unique ability to harness sunlight for photosynthesis, enabling it to synthesize food. Positioned at the front of the cell is an eyespot that acts as its light-sensitive compass, guiding it towards sources of sunlight. However, when necessary, this resourceful creature can also feed on other micro-organisms. Measuring between 50-100 micrometres in length (a mere fraction of a millimeter), these mobile organisms exhibit incredible diversity within their species. This mesmerizing image captures not only their vibrant colors but also their remarkable structures and behaviors. As we delve into the microscopic realm with this photograph from Science Photo Library's collection, we gain insight into nature's intricacies and marvel at the wonders hidden within even the tiniest creatures like Euglena protozoa.
