SEM of blood clot

Thrombosis. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a thrombus (clot) of red blood cells inside a blood vessel. Blood clotting may occur after an injury in order to seal the damaged tissues but may also develop inside major blood vessels. In this case they are known as thrombi and obstruct the normal flow of blood leading to dangerous conditions such as heart attacks and strokes. The formation of thrombi is encouraged by the deposition of atheroma (fatty deposits), a condition known as atherosclerosis, along the walls of blood vessels. Magnification: x110 at 6x7cm size. x150 at 4x5ins

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-color scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a blood clot, also known as thrombosis. The intricate image reveals a cluster of red blood cells forming a thrombus inside a blood vessel. While blood clotting is an essential process to seal injuries and protect damaged tissues, it can become problematic when clots develop within major blood vessels. Thrombi like the one depicted in this SEM obstruct the normal flow of blood, leading to potentially life-threatening conditions such as heart attacks and strokes. The formation of these dangerous clots is often influenced by the presence of fatty deposits called atheroma along the walls of blood vessels, which is commonly referred to as atherosclerosis. With its magnification at x110 for 6x7cm size or x150 for 4x5ins, this SEM provides an up-close look at the intricate details within our circulatory system. It serves as a reminder that our bodies are complex and delicate systems that require proper care and attention. This thought-provoking image offers valuable insights into the field of haematology and highlights the importance of understanding disorders related to clotting mechanisms. By shedding light on this critical aspect of human anatomy, it contributes to advancements in medical research and healthcare practices aimed at preventing or treating conditions associated with thrombosis.
