Photographic Print : Respiratory syncytial virus, TEM
Photo Prints from Science Photo Library
Respiratory syncytial virus, TEM
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) particles, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). This pneumovirus, a type of paramyxovirus, is a major cause of human respiratory tract infections in patients of all ages. Each virion consists of RNA (ribonucleic acid) genetic material enclosed in a protein coat, or capsid (orange and brown), within a phospholipid envelope (brown and green). The envelope is covered in protein spikes (yellow), which enable the virus to attach to and enter a host cell. In adults, RSV only affects the upper respiratory tract, but in infants bronchiolitis (bronchiole inflammation) or bronchopneumonia can result. Magnification: x118, 000 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in all its intricate detail. The colored transmission electron micrograph (TEM) reveals the various components of this pneumovirus, a type of paramyxovirus that is responsible for causing respiratory tract infections in individuals of all ages. Each virion, or virus particle, is composed of RNA genetic material enclosed within a protein coat called a capsid. Surrounding the capsid is a phospholipid envelope, depicted in shades of brown and green. This envelope plays a crucial role in protecting and delivering the viral genetic material to host cells. The surface of the envelope is adorned with distinctive protein spikes colored yellow. These spikes enable RSV to attach itself to host cells and initiate infection. Understanding these structural features provides valuable insights into how this pathogen interacts with our respiratory system. While adults typically experience upper respiratory tract symptoms when infected with RSV, infants are more vulnerable to severe complications such as bronchiolitis or bronchopneumonia. This image serves as a reminder of the importance of studying viruses like RSV and developing effective treatments and preventive measures. With an impressive magnification level of x118,000 when printed 10 centimeters wide, this photograph captures both the beauty and complexity inherent in microbiology research. It exemplifies how science can unravel mysteries at microscopic levels while offering hope for combating infectious diseases that impact human health worldwide.
