Oesophagus epithelium, SEM

Oesophagus epithelium. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the lining of the human oesophagus or gullet (yellow) and two unknown bacteria (pink & purple). The lining is composed of non-keratinised striated squamous epithelial cells, which have a surface covered in characteristic ridge-like folds (microplicae). Many types of bacteria are found throughout the alimentary canal. Rod-shaped varieties are known as bacilli, and ball-shaped varieties are known as cocci. The oesophagus is a muscular tube about 25 centimetres long that runs from the back of the throat to the stomach. Magnification: x 1700

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate beauty of the oesophagus epithelium, providing a glimpse into the hidden world within our bodies. The image reveals the lining of the human oesophagus or gullet in a vibrant yellow hue, contrasting against two mysterious bacteria colored in shades of pink and purple. The oesophageal lining is composed of non-keratinised striated squamous epithelial cells, which possess characteristic ridge-like folds known as microplicae. These folds create an expansive surface area for efficient nutrient absorption and digestion. Interestingly, this microcosm also hosts various types of bacteria throughout the alimentary canal. Rod-shaped bacilli and spherical cocci are among these microscopic inhabitants. Bacilli are elongated while cocci appear round in shape. Together, they form part of the complex ecosystem that aids in maintaining a healthy digestive system. Stretching approximately 25 centimeters long from the back of our throat to our stomach, the oesophagus is a muscular tube responsible for transporting food during swallowing. This SEM magnification at x1700 allows us to appreciate its layered tissue structure and understand its vital role within our anatomy. Science Photo Library's remarkable capture not only highlights scientific knowledge but also serves as a reminder that even within ourselves lies an awe-inspiring world waiting to be explored.
