Mounted Print : Thalassaemia, X-ray
Mounted Prints from Science Photo Library
Thalassaemia, X-ray
Thalassaemia. Coloured hand X-ray of a patient with thalassaemia, also known as Cooleys anaemia. The bones of the hand show demineralization (lighter patches). This inherited disorder results from an abnormality in the protein part of the haemoglobin molecule of red blood cells (erythrocytes). The patients erythrocytes are therefore fragile, rapidly haemolysing (breaking up) as they move through the body. Other symptoms of this disease include anaemia, fatigue and jaundice. Treatment with blood transfusions is common, but this disease is usually fatal

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the effects of Thalassaemia, a genetic disorder also known as Cooley's anaemia. The image displays a coloured X-ray of a patient's hand, revealing demineralization in the bones (depicted by lighter patches). Thalassaemia is caused by an abnormality in the protein part of the haemoglobin molecule found in red blood cells. Consequently, these erythrocytes become fragile and rapidly break down as they circulate throughout the body. The photograph not only highlights the physical manifestation of this condition but also sheds light on its debilitating symptoms. Patients with Thalassaemia often experience anaemia, fatigue, and jaundice due to their compromised red blood cells. To manage this disease, regular blood transfusions are commonly employed; however, it is important to note that Thalassaemia typically leads to fatal outcomes. Through this powerful visual representation provided by Science Photo Library, we gain insight into both the diagnostic aspect and impact on patients' lives associated with Thalassaemia. The intricate details captured within this radiographic image allow us to observe deformities present in joints and fingers affected by this inherited disorder. Overall, this print serves as a valuable educational tool for healthcare professionals and researchers studying thalassemia while raising awareness about its profound consequences on individuals' health and well-being.
