Emphysema of the lungs, CT scan
Emphysema. Coloured 3-D computed tomography (CT) scan of the lungs, showing advanced emphysema of the right lung (left). Emphysema is a disease in which the tiny lung air sacs (alveoli, purple) become enlarged and the walls separating them are damaged. It is strongly associated with smoking. Two large areas of severe damage are at lower and upper left. The reduced surface area for gaseous exchange restricts oxygen uptake. This may cause breathlessness, bluish skin, and heart or respiratory failure. Treatment is with drugs and the cessation of smoking. For several CT scans of these lungs, see images M150/223-227

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the devastating effects of emphysema on the lungs. The coloured 3-D computed tomography (CT) scan reveals advanced emphysema in the right lung, with enlarged and damaged alveoli, which are responsible for gas exchange. Emphysema is primarily associated with smoking, making it a stark reminder of the harmful consequences of this habit. The image highlights two large areas of severe damage in the lower and upper left portions of the lungs. This extensive destruction significantly reduces the surface area available for oxygen uptake, leading to symptoms such as breathlessness, bluish skin discoloration, and potential heart or respiratory failure. Fortunately, treatment options exist for individuals suffering from emphysema. Medical intervention includes drug therapies aimed at managing symptoms and preventing further deterioration. However, one crucial aspect is emphasized: quitting smoking is essential to halt disease progression. Science Photo Library's collection features several CT scans showcasing different stages of emphysema in these lungs. These images serve as valuable educational resources for healthcare professionals studying pulmonary disorders or anyone interested in understanding the impact of smoking on our respiratory system.
