These Gram- positive rod-shaped bacteria are the main cause of human tuberculosis. If a bacterium enters the lungs in a droplet coughed or sneezed by an infected person, it multiplies to form a localized bacterial colony (primary tubercle). Normally the immune system destroys the tubercle. Sometimes, however, the bacteria then either spread to other parts of the body, which can be fatal, or lie dormant, only becoming active again several years later. Magnification unknown

This print showcases the Tuberculosis bacteria, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, in all its intricate detail. Taken using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), this coloured image reveals the Gram-positive rod-shaped bacteria responsible for causing human tuberculosis.
