Nasturtium leaf, SEM

Nasturtium leaf. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the underside of a nasturtium leaf (Tropaeolum sp.). Numerous hairs (trichomes) cover the surface, they protect the plant from small herbivores and reduce the amount of evaporation from the leafs surface. The branching veins are also seen. The veins consist of the phloem, which transports sugar made in the leaves during photosynthesis to the rest of the plant, and the xylem, which transports water and minerals from the roots to the leaves

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a nasturtium leaf, captured through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The underside of the leaf reveals a mesmerizing network of branching veins that play a vital role in the plant's survival. These veins consist of two essential components: the phloem and xylem. The phloem acts as a transportation system within the plant, carrying sugars produced during photosynthesis from the leaves to other parts of the organism. On the other hand, the xylem is responsible for transporting water and minerals from roots to leaves, ensuring proper hydration and nourishment. Adorning this leaf's surface are numerous delicate hairs known as trichomes. These tiny structures serve multiple purposes; they act as natural armor against small herbivores by providing protection and also help reduce evaporation from the leaf's surface, conserving precious moisture. The vibrant green hues depicted in this false-colored image highlight various biological features such as epidermal cells and trichomes. It serves as an awe-inspiring reminder of nature's intricate design at microscopic levels. This stunning SEM photograph not only captures botanical details but also offers us insight into how plants have evolved sophisticated systems to thrive in their environments. As we marvel at its complexity, we gain appreciation for these remarkable organisms that contribute so much to our planet's biodiversity.
