Ash stem, light micrograph

Ash stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the woody stem of an ash (Fraxinus excelsior) tree showing four growth rings (concentric circles). The outer layer (top) is composed of cork (blackish-brown), underneath which is the cortex (red-purple), with primary phloem fibres (light red bundles) in the inner cortex. Under this is a layer of phloem sieve tubes with simple sieve plates (dark blue and deep red). Under the phloem is a ring of cambium (deep blue) and under this is a thick layer of wood (xylem, pink). The solid pith (bottom) is composed of parenchyma cells. Magnification: x106 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of an ash stem, as seen under a light microscope. The transverse section reveals four distinct growth rings, represented by concentric circles. Starting from the outer layer, we observe the cork, characterized by its blackish-brown hue. Just beneath lies the cortex, displaying a vibrant red-purple coloration. Moving inward, we encounter primary phloem fibers in bundles of light red hues within the inner cortex. Below this layer resides a ring of phloem sieve tubes adorned with simple sieve plates in shades of dark blue and deep red. Further down is a striking band of cambium depicted in deep blue tones. The thick layer that follows represents the xylem or wood, portrayed in delicate pink shades. Finally, at the bottom lies the solid pith composed of parenchyma cells. With a magnification factor of 106 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this image offers an up-close exploration into plant biology and structure. It highlights various cellular components such as vessels and tracheids found within angiosperms like Fraxinus excelsior (commonly known as ash). This visually stunning photograph serves as a testament to nature's complexity and provides valuable insights for botanical research and education alike.
