Trabeculae carneae in the heart, SEM
Trabeculae carneae in the left ventricle of the heart, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Endocardial connective tissue is also seen. The trabeculae carneae are muscular, columnar protrusions found on the internal surface of the ventricles, the main pumping chambers of the heart. It is thought that the trabeculae carneae help prevent suction that would occur with a smooth surface. Some trabeculae carneae also act as a type of connective tissue, to help bind the hearts muscle tissue together
