Steroid secreting cell, TEM

Steroid secreting cell. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a cell involved with steroid synthesis and secretion (steroidogenesis). It contains many mitochondria (dark grey, oval) and abundant membranes of smooth endoplasmic reticulum (ER, dark lines). These organelles supply the necessary enzymes for the assembly of steroid molecules, beginning with cholesterol inside the mitochondria. When fully synthesised by the smooth ER, most steroids leave the cell by diffusion. Magnification: x2, 000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of a steroid secreting cell, as captured by a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The image reveals the remarkable complexity involved in the production of steroids within this specialized cell. The TEM section highlights numerous mitochondria, depicted as dark grey ovals, which play a crucial role in synthesizing steroid molecules. These energy-producing organelles work in tandem with abundant smooth endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membranes, represented by dark lines. Together, they provide the necessary enzymes for assembling steroids starting from cholesterol inside the mitochondria. Once fully synthesized by the smooth ER, most steroids exit the cell through diffusion. This process ensures that these vital hormones can reach their intended targets throughout the body to regulate various physiological functions. With a magnification of x2,000 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this photograph offers an up-close look into cellular biology and histology. It serves as a testament to both nature's intricacy and human scientific advancements in understanding such complex processes at microscopic levels. This stunning visual representation is brought to you by Science Photo Library – an invaluable resource for researchers and enthusiasts alike seeking to explore and appreciate our fascinating biological world.
