Rust fungus infection, light micrograph
Rust fungus infection, light micrograph. Transverse section through a barberry (Berberis sp.) leaf infected by a parasitic rust (Puccinia sp.). There are two full cluster cups (aecidia, across upper centre) which have broken through the lower epidermis. The aecidium walls (peridium) have curled back and the rows of spore-forming cells produce aecidiospores, which are dispersed by wind or insects. Magnification: x100 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a rust fungus infection on a barberry leaf. Under the light microscope, we are granted a glimpse into the fascinating world of plant pathology and cellular biology. The transverse section reveals two fully formed cluster cups, known as aecidia, which have forcefully emerged through the lower epidermis. As if frozen in time, the walls of these cup-shaped structures curl back to expose rows of spore-forming cells that produce countless aecidiospores. The delicate balance between wind and insects becomes evident as these tiny spores are dispersed into their surroundings. Magnified at x100 and printed at 10 centimeters wide, this image allows us to appreciate every minute detail within this botanical marvel. Through this visual exploration, we gain insight into the internal structure and reproductive parts affected by this parasitic rust fungus infection. It serves as a reminder of nature's complexity and its ability to create both beauty and disorder simultaneously. This print is not just an artistic representation but also an invaluable scientific tool for mycologists studying fungal infections or botanists delving into plant anatomy. Its inclusion in Science Photo Library ensures that it will contribute to our understanding of diseases that impact flora while inspiring awe for the intricacies found within our natural world.
