Osteoblast bone cell, SEM

Osteoblast bone cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an osteoblast (centre) in bone tissue. Osteoblasts are primarily found in regions of new bone growth. They produce and secrete osteoid, a matrix of new bone tissue composed of collagen fibrils and other structural proteins. As soon as osteoid is formed, calcium salts crystallise inside it to form hard, mineralised bone. Magnification: x8000 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of bone tissue through a scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an osteoblast, a specialized bone cell. The vibrant colors bring to life the complex structure and function of this essential component in our bodies. At the center of the image, we see an osteoblast diligently at work in regions of new bone growth. These remarkable cells play a crucial role in producing and secreting osteoid, which forms the matrix for new bone tissue. Composed of collagen fibrils and other structural proteins, this osteoid serves as a foundation for future mineralization. The high magnification level allows us to appreciate the fine details within this microscopic realm. Calcium salts crystallize inside the newly formed osteoid, transforming it into hard, mineralized bone that provides strength and support to our skeletal system. Steve Gschmeissner's expertise behind this photograph is evident as he captures both scientific accuracy and artistic beauty. This stunning visual representation not only highlights the wonders of cell biology but also emphasizes how vital these processes are for maintaining healthy bones. Whether you're fascinated by anatomy or simply intrigued by nature's complexity on a microscopic scale, this mesmerizing print offers an opportunity to explore one aspect of our body's incredible architecture with awe-inspiring clarity.
