Lung blood vessels, X-ray

Lung blood vessels. Coloured angiogram of the heart and pulmonary arteries. The heart is at lower right. The left and right pulmonary arteries branch from the top of the heart. The pulmonary arteries carry deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs. The arteries branch many times into smaller and smaller vessels. The smallest vessels are wrapped around tiny air sacs (alveoli). Alveoli are the site of gaseous exchange; oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide leaves. The oxygenated blood then travels through the pulmonary veins (not seen) back to the heart where it is pumped around the body. Angiography uses a contrast medium to show blood vessels on an X-ray

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate network of lung blood vessels, as seen through an X-ray. The coloured angiogram highlights the heart and pulmonary arteries, with the heart positioned at the lower right corner. From the top of the heart, both left and right pulmonary arteries branch out, carrying deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs. As we delve deeper into this remarkable image, we witness how these arteries divide numerous times into smaller and smaller vessels. These tiny vessels intricately wrap around minuscule air sacs known as alveoli – crucial sites for gaseous exchange. It is here that oxygen enters our bloodstream while carbon dioxide exits. The journey continues as oxygenated blood flows through unseen pulmonary veins back to the heart, where it is then pumped throughout our entire body. This process forms a vital part of our cardiovascular system's function. To capture this breathtaking image, angiography was employed using a contrast medium to enhance visibility on an X-ray machine. The resulting false-coloured radiograph offers us a unique glimpse into one aspect of human anatomy - specifically focusing on lung blood vessels within an adult's thorax. This awe-inspiring photograph serves as a testament to Science Photo Library's dedication in capturing extraordinary visuals that educate and inspire curiosity about our wondrous human body.
