Neck arthritis treatment. Coloured X-ray angiogram of the neck of a 48 year old patient with severe osteoarthritis of the neck, whose cervical spine has been stabilised with a metal plate (rectangular). The plate is holding two adjacent vertebrae together in the correct alignment. The two blood vessels seen either side of the plate are vertebral arteries. This procedure is known as arthrodesis. Osteoarthritis of the neck, also known as cervical spondylosis, is a disease associated with the ageing process and mechanical stress. False-colour normal abdominal angiogram

Normal abdominal angiogram: false-colour abdominal angiogram showing the normal appearance of the aorta and upper iliac arteries of an 81 year old man. The division, or bifurcation, of the aorta into the left & right iliac arteries appears as an inverted Y. The patient was suffering from extensive peripheral arterial disease lower down his left leg (at right here), but these lesions are not visible in this image. Abdominal angiography is an X-ray technique in which the arteries are outlined by radio-opaque contrast medium, introduced through a catheter inserted via the femoral artery. Compare with M175/053 et seq, angiograms of the lower femoral & popliteal arteries, with a prosthetic stent inserted in the left leg to compensate for occlusion by atheroma plaques
