Green algae colonies
Green algae colonies. Light micrograph of green algae colonies (Volvox sp.). These colonies are made up of approximately 500 individual flagellate cells, arranged in a glycoprotein filled sphere. The cells contain two cilia that are used to move the algae through water. Each cell has two eyespots and a chloroplast, which enable the colony to swim towards light and photosynthesise. The cells produce daughter colonies through asexual reproduction. The daughter colonies are held within the parent, which later disintegrate and the daughter colonies invert. Magnification x 16

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of green algae colonies. Under the lens of a light microscope, we are granted a glimpse into the intricate world of these microscopic organisms. Composed of around 500 individual flagellate cells, these colonies form spherical structures filled with glycoprotein. The remarkable adaptability and functionality of these cells become apparent as we observe their features. Each cell possesses two cilia, which serve as propellers to navigate through water. Additionally, they possess two eyespots and a chloroplast that enable them to swim towards light sources and carry out photosynthesis. Reproduction takes place through asexual means, where daughter colonies are produced within the parent structure. Eventually, the parent disintegrates while the daughter colonies invert themselves for independent existence. Magnified sixteen times over, this image invites us to appreciate nature's complexity at its smallest scale. It serves as a reminder that even in seemingly inconspicuous corners of our world, life thrives in diverse forms and exhibits extraordinary adaptations. Through this photograph from Science Photo Library's collection focused on nature and biology subjects like botany and zoology, we gain insight into one aspect of Earth's rich biodiversity – green algae colonies – highlighting their significance within aquatic ecosystems.
