Eyjafjallajokull eruption, April 2010

Eyjafjallajokull eruption. Satellite image of the ash cloud (grey, centre) from the April 2010 Eyjafjallajokull eruption being blown towards Europe. The volcano erupted below the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in Iceland (outlined beneath the clouds at upper left) on 14 April, sending ash high into the atmosphere. The ash was then blown eastwards by the wind over the following day, leading to the airspace over the UK and other northern European countries being shut down due to the hazard the ash posed to aircraft engines. The northern tip of the UK is at lower right. This image was obtained at 11:35 UTC on 15 April 2010, by NASAs Terra satellite

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dramatic eruption of Eyjafjallajokull in April 2010, showcasing the immense power and beauty of nature. Taken from a satellite image, the photograph displays a massive ash cloud (grey, centre) billowing towards Europe as a result of the volcanic activity beneath Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull glacier. On April 14th, this Icelandic volcano unleashed its fury, propelling ash high into the atmosphere. Over the following day, prevailing winds carried the hazardous ash eastwards towards Europe. The consequences were severe: airspace over various northern European countries including the United Kingdom had to be shut down due to potential damage that could be caused to aircraft engines by these tiny particles. In this image obtained on April 15th at 11:35 UTC by NASA's Terra satellite, we can see how vast and far-reaching this ash plume was. The outline of Eyjafjallajokull glacier is visible beneath the clouds at upper left while Scotland appears at lower right. The eruption not only disrupted air travel but also highlighted both the danger and vulnerability posed by natural hazards such as volcanic eruptions. This event serves as a reminder of how Earth's geology can impact our daily lives and transportation industry in unexpected ways. Captured with stunning clarity from space, this print showcases both scientific marvels like satellites' ability for earth observation and humanity's ongoing efforts to understand and mitigate natural disasters through disciplines like volcanology.
