Brain anatomy
Brain, historical anatomical artwork. This is a sagittal (front to back) section showing the structures in the centre of the brain. The cortex (top) is permeated with blood vessels (red and blue). Below this is the corpus callosum (white), a nerve bundle connecting the right and left hemispheres of the brain. The cauliflower-like structure towards the back of the brain is the cerebellum. Just in front of this is the brainstem, which leads into the spinal cord. This illustration is taken from the 19th century French textbook The Atlas of Human Anatomy and Surgery by J. M. Bourgery and N. H. Jacob
