Bone marrow, light micrograph
Bone marrow. Light micrograph of a section through a sample of bone marrow to show haemopoiesis (the formation of blood cells). The large white spaces are fat cells, while the smaller red cells are red blood cells (erythrocytes) and other blood cells. At centre is a megakaryocyte, the bone marrow cell responsible for the production of blood platelets. Bone marrow contains blood stem cells, used to provide a constant supply of new blood cells throughout a persons lifetime. Magnification: x1000 when printed 10 centimetres wide
