Blood vessels in the lung, SEM
Blood vessels in the lung, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Airways called bronchioles (orange) bring air into the lungs. These terminate in tiny air sacs called alveoli. The alveoli are surrounded by capillaries (green), small blood vessels with thin walls. Gases can diffuse through these walls, so the blood takes up oxygen and releases carbon dioxide for exhalation. This is a resin cast. Magnification: x70 when printed 10cm high
