Tobacco plant protoplast, SEM

Protoplast. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a tobacco plant (Nicotiana tabacum) protoplast. A protoplast is a plant cell that has had its tough outer cell wall removed by chemical treatment. This leaves an intact cell with its contents surrounded by its plasma membrane. The cell wall can later be regrown. The dimples on this protoplast are due to contraction of the outer membrane during drying. Each dimple corresponds to the position of a chloroplast. Protoplasts are used instead of intact cells in plant genetic engineering as they are easier to manipulate. Magnification: x3600 when printed 10 centimetres tall

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a tobacco plant protoplast. The image, taken using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), reveals the inner workings of this plant cell after its tough outer cell wall has been removed through chemical treatment. What remains is an intact cell surrounded by its plasma membrane, with each dimple on the surface corresponding to the position of a chloroplast. The contraction of the outer membrane during drying creates these mesmerizing dimples, adding texture and depth to the image. Protoplasts like this one are commonly used in plant genetic engineering due to their ease of manipulation compared to intact cells. At a magnification of x3600 when printed 10 centimeters tall, every detail becomes apparent, allowing us to appreciate nature's complexity at a microscopic level. The false coloring applied enhances our understanding and appreciation for this biological marvel. This print serves as a reminder that even within seemingly ordinary plants such as tobacco, there exists extraordinary intricacy waiting to be explored. It highlights both the scientific significance and aesthetic appeal found in subjects related to biology and botany.
