TEM of E. coli bacterium

False colour transmission electron micrograph (shadow technique) of the bacterium Escherichia coli, a normal inhabitant of the human intestine. Under certain conditions it may become harmful & cause infection in the intestinal or urinogenital tracts. The hairlike appendages around the bacterium (shown by shadowing), are pili, structures associated with bacterial conjugation. This specimen is in the early stages of binary fission, the process by which the bacterium divides in two. E. coli is the organism most commonly used in genetic engineering experiments. Magnification: x14, 700 at 35mm size, x29, 400 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour transmission electron micrograph of an E. coli bacterium, providing a glimpse into the intricate world of microbiology. Escherichia coli is a naturally occurring bacterium found in the human intestine, but it can turn harmful under certain circumstances and cause infections in the intestinal or urinogenital tracts. The shadow technique used to capture this image beautifully highlights the hairlike appendages surrounding the bacterium known as pili, which play a crucial role in bacterial conjugation. These structures facilitate genetic exchange between bacteria, contributing to their adaptability and survival. In this particular specimen, we witness E. coli during its early stages of binary fission – the process by which it divides into two daughter cells. This remarkable phenomenon allows bacteria to multiply rapidly and colonize various environments. It's worth noting that E. coli holds significant importance beyond its potential harm as it is widely utilized in genetic engineering experiments due to its versatility and well-understood characteristics. With magnifications reaching x14,700 at 35mm size and x29,400 at 6x7cm size, this TEM image offers us an up-close look at these fascinating microorganisms that shape our understanding of biology on a molecular level. This awe-inspiring print from Science Photo Library serves as a reminder of both the beauty and complexity hidden within even the tiniest organisms inhabiting our world.
