Escherichia coli 0157: H7 bacteria

E. coli 0157:H7 bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of Escherichia coli 0157:H7 bacteria, cause of foodborne illness. This E. coli strain was responsible for the outbreak of food poisoning in Scotland in 1996, when over a dozen people died & hundreds were taken ill. It causes bloody diarrhoea and occasionally kidney failure, particularly in the elderly & very young. The strain originates from the intestines of some cattle and spreads to contaminate beef and milk. Pasteurisation of milk and thorough cooking of all meat helps to prevent its transmission. Magnification: x4, 400 at 6x4.5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Escherichia coli 0157:H7 bacteria, a notorious cause of foodborne illness. In this coloured transmission electron micrograph, the intricate details of these harmful bacteria are brought to life. The E. coli 0157:H7 strain gained infamy during the devastating outbreak of food poisoning in Scotland back in 1996, claiming numerous lives and leaving hundreds severely ill. Its effects are particularly severe, causing bloody diarrhea and even kidney failure, especially among vulnerable populations such as the elderly and young children. Originating from the intestines of certain cattle, this strain easily contaminates beef and milk products if not properly handled or cooked. However, preventive measures like pasteurization of milk and thorough cooking of all meat significantly reduce its transmission. At a magnification level of x4,400 on a compact 6x4.5cm size print, this image offers an up-close look at these dangerous microbes responsible for gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide. It serves as a reminder that proper hygiene practices and safe food preparation techniques play crucial roles in preventing the spread of bacterial infections. This remarkable photograph is part of Science Photo Library's extensive collection on bacteriology and microbiology studies—offering valuable insights into our understanding of microorganisms' impact on human health while emphasizing their significance in public health initiatives globally.
