Acetobacter and Schizosaccharomyces

Acetobacter and Schizosaccharomyces. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of Acetobacter bacteria and Schizosaccharomyces yeast cells in a culture of Kombucha" tea. Acetobacter (purple) is rod-shaped, Gram-negative and motile. It is one of the acetic acid bacteria. Schizosaccharomyces (oval) is a yeast fungus. The bacteria & fungi are in a cellulose matrix (strands). These bacteria & yeast cells are used in the making of Kombucha, a fermented tea originating from Russia. Strong tea sweetened with sugar has a culture of the bacteria and yeast added to it. The tea ferments and is thought to have health giving properties. Magnification: x2770 at 6x7cm."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of Acetobacter bacteria and Schizosaccharomyces yeast cells in a culture of Kombucha tea. The vibrant colors bring to life the fascinating microorganisms that play a crucial role in the fermentation process. Acetobacter, depicted in purple, is a rod-shaped, Gram-negative bacterium known for its motility. It belongs to the acetic acid bacteria family and contributes to the unique flavor profile of Kombucha. On the other hand, Schizosaccharomyces, portrayed as oval shapes, represents a yeast fungus that adds complexity to this fermented beverage. The cellulose matrix strands surrounding these bacterial and yeast cells create an enchanting visual effect. This print offers a glimpse into how these microbes interact within their environment during Kombucha production. Originating from Russia, this traditional drink involves adding cultures of bacteria and yeast to sweetened strong tea. As time passes, fermentation takes place resulting in what is believed to be health-promoting properties. With a magnification level of x2770 at 6x7cm, this image allows us to appreciate the intricate details of these microorganisms that are usually invisible to our naked eyes. Whether you are interested in microbiology or simply fascinated by nature's hidden wonders, this photograph serves as a reminder of how even tiny organisms can have significant impacts on our daily lives.
