Historical cosmologies

Historical cosmologies. Artwork of four historical models of planetary orbits. Ptolemys geocentric (Earth-centred) model (upper right) dominated astronomy for over 1000 years. Copernicus published his heliocentric (Sun-centred) model (upper left) in 1543. It was eventually recognised that the Earth orbited the Sun, but Tycho Brahes post-Copernican model (lower left) tried to keep the Sun orbiting a stationary Earth. Theories of planetary motions included Descartess vortices (lower right) of 1644, replaced by Newtons theory of gravity (1687). Diagram published in Paris in 1777, four years before the discovery of Uranus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the evolution of historical cosmologies, offering a glimpse into humanity's quest to understand the mysteries of our universe. The artwork features four distinct models of planetary orbits, each representing a significant milestone in astronomical history. In the upper right corner, we find Ptolemy's geocentric model, which reigned supreme for over a millennium. This Earth-centered perspective dominated astronomy until Copernicus boldly introduced his heliocentric model in 1543 (upper left). Although it took time for society to accept that Earth orbited the Sun, Tycho Brahe's post-Copernican model (lower left) attempted to reconcile this new understanding while keeping the Sun revolving around a stationary Earth. The lower right quadrant presents Descartes' vortices from 1644, an intricate theory subsequently replaced by Newton's groundbreaking law of gravity in 1687. Published in Paris in 1777, just before Uranus was discovered, this diagram captures an important juncture where scientific knowledge was on the cusp of another transformative leap. Through this thought-provoking illustration from Science Photo Library, we witness how theories and ideas about planetary motion evolved throughout history. It serves as a testament to human curiosity and ingenuity as we strive to unravel the secrets of our vast cosmos.
