EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable specimen of clinoclase, found in the picturesque region of St Day, Gwennap, Cornwall, England. The spheroidal coating of clinoclase beautifully encases liroconite crystals, creating an exquisite display measuring 4.5 cm in diameter. Believed to originate from either Wheal Gorland or Wheal Unity mines, this unique find was documented by collector Philip Rashleigh in his mineral catalogue as "963 A globular copper ore in plated crystals". He further described its surface as possessing a deep blue or black hue that potentially colored the surrounding copper ore with a mesmerizing sky blue shade. Clinoclase holds significant historical importance as it was first discovered right here in Cornwall and subsequently named after its type locality at Wheal Gorland. Although initially described by Rashleigh himself, the mineral received its formal name only after his passing. This particular specimen is part of the esteemed Rashleigh Collection and serves as a testament to Cornwall's rich geological heritage. The photograph expertly captures the dark blue-green-black coloration and spherical shape characteristic of clinoclase formations. Its presence evokes thoughts of mining endeavors within this region while highlighting the secondary minerals such as arsenic and aluminum associated with these geological formations. Andy Tindle's skillful photography allows us to appreciate this stunning piece from Royal Cornwall Museum without mentioning any commercial use but instead focusing on its geology and Cornish origins.
