Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his ordinary camera are, in some cases, painted by his own hand to great effect

EDITORS COMMENTS
Capturing the spirit of leisure and adventure, this vintage print showcases a group of ladies paddling on an unknown beach in Cornwall around 1925. The photographer behind this remarkable image is Major Arthur William Gill, a Cornishman known for his passion for photography during the early 20th century. Major Gill's talent as both an amateur photographer and filmmaker earned him recognition from prestigious institutions such as The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and the London Cornish Society. His presentations of stills and cine film were highly regarded by these groups. Using his ordinary camera, Major Gill prolifically captured moments like this one on quarter plate slides. What sets his work apart is that he often added his own artistic touch to some of these photographs by hand-painting them with great skill and precision. This particular photograph transports us back to a time when women embraced outdoor activities with enthusiasm. With their skirts modestly raised above their ankles, these adventurous ladies fearlessly wade into the sparkling waters off Cornwall's coast. Their joyful expressions reflect the carefree spirit that permeated society during those years. Preserved within the archives of the Royal Cornwall Museum, this print serves as a testament to Major Arthur William Gill's dedication to capturing life's precious moments through his lens.
