Opening of the Royal Aquarium and Summer and Winter Garden, Westminster, by the Duke of Edinburgh, 1876. There was an assembly of nearly ten thousand ladies and gentlemen...The Royal box was decorated with festooned curtains of crimson damask, blue silk hangings with white lace, and lilies provided by Mr. Wills, florist...this undertaking is intended, besides the aquarium...to afford facilities for "the encouragement of artistic, scientific, and musical tastes". It is to be "not only a popular exhibition, but a means of intellectual enjoyment and educational advantage". His Royal Highness...recognised those higher aims, which were the same that his father had in view at the Exhibition of 1851. He observed "the extensive aquarium, which is the main object of this institution, cannot fail...to stimulate the love of natural history and the acquirement of scientific knowledge". EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the grand opening of the Royal Aquarium and Summer and Winter Gardens in Westminster, London, in 1876. The Duke of Edinburgh, His Royal Highness Prince George, is seen gracefully opening the venue in the presence of an assembly of nearly ten thousand esteemed ladies and gentlemen. The royal box is elegantly adorned with crimson damask curtains, blue silk hangings with white lace, and lilies, generously provided by Mr. Wills, the renowned florist. The Royal Aquarium and Summer and Winter Gardens were not merely an exhibition, but a sanctuary for the encouragement of artistic, scientific, and musical tastes. This undertaking, as stated in the Illustrated London News of 1876, aimed to provide 'not only a popular exhibition, but a means of intellectual enjoyment and educational advantage.' The Duke of Edinburgh, recognizing the higher aims of this institution, echoed the sentiments of his father, who had envisioned a similar intellectual and educational purpose at the Exhibition of 1851. He was particularly moved by the extensive aquarium, which he believed 'cannot fail to stimulate the love of natural history and the acquisition of scientific knowledge.' This photograph offers a glimpse into the grandeur and sophistication of the Victorian era, as well as the intellectual curiosity and appreciation for the natural world that defined the era. The Royal Aquarium and Summer and Winter Gardens stood as a testament to the power of knowledge, art, and beauty to captivate and inspire the masses.
