Whitehall Place CC97_00925

WHITEHALL PLACE, City of Westminster, London. Horse-drawn hansom cabs are waiting for fares outside the recently built National Liberal Club in the Victorian equivalent of a taxi rank. The small hut to the foreground is a cabman's shelter, which offered some refuge from the elements. York & Son image taken some time between 1887 and 1900

'Two Wedgwood Mugs Designed by Eric Ravilious', 1944. Creator: Unknown

'Two Wedgwood Mugs Designed by Eric Ravilious', 1944. 'Wedgwood Commemorations mug - Etruria 1730: Barlaston 1940; Edward VIII Coronation mug dated 1937'. The Etruria Works ceramics factory at Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, was opened by Josiah Wedgwood in 1769. Production was moved to a modern purpose-built factory in a rural setting at nearby Barlaston, built between 1938 and 1940. King Edward VIII ruled from 20 January 1936 until his abdication on 11 December of the same year. His coronation had been due to take place at Westminster Abbey on 12 May 1937. When he abdicated, preparations had already begun and souvenirs were on sale. From "English Pottery and China', by Cecilia Sempill. [Collins, London, 1944]

Alhambra Leicester Square CC97_00503 Featured Westminster Print

Alhambra Leicester Square CC97_00503

Alhambra theatre, Leicester Square, Westminster, London 1870-??82. York & Son wet collodion glass plate negative.
The Alhambra in London'??s Leicester Square was the brainchild of the impresario and showman Edward Tyrell Smith who bought it in 1858 for the staging of circus acts and later musical theatre. Its Moorish styling included domes, minarets, and horseshoe arches. A fire in 1882 led to its rebuilding, but it was demolished in 1936 as the popularity of music hall entertainment declined. It was replaced by an Oden Cinema (see BB87_03577)
