White matter fibres of the human brain C014 / 5666

White matter fibres. Coloured 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI) scan of the bundles of white matter nerve fibres in the brain. The fibres transmit nerve signals between brain regions and between the brain and the spinal cord. Diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) is a variant of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in which a magnetic field maps the water contained in neuron fibers, thus mapping their criss-crossing patterns. A similar technique called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is also used to explore neural data of white matter fibres in the brain. Both methods allow mapping of their orientations and the connections between brain regions. Data/software: NIH Human Connectome Project /humanconnectomeproject.org)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate network of white matter fibres in the human brain. Coloured using 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI) scan, it offers a mesmerizing visual representation of the bundles of nerve fibres that transmit signals between different regions of the brain and even to the spinal cord. Utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), specifically DSI, this technique maps the water contained within these neuron fibers, allowing for an accurate depiction of their criss-crossing patterns. Another method known as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is also employed to explore neural data related to white matter fibres in the brain. Both DTI and DSI enable researchers to map not only the orientations but also establish connections between various brain regions. The significance of understanding these pathways lies in unraveling how information flows within our nervous system. By mapping out these intricate fibre tracks, scientists gain valuable insights into how different parts of our brains communicate with each other. This remarkable image was made possible by utilizing data and software from NIH Human Connectome Project/humanconnectomeproject. org, emphasizing its importance in advancing our knowledge about neural connectivity. The photograph itself was captured by PASIEKA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, showcasing their expertise in capturing scientific imagery that captivates both experts and enthusiasts alike.
