Pea flower stigma, SEM

Pea flower stigma. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a common or garden pea flower (Pisum sativum) stigma. This is part of the female reproductive structure (pistil), which is formed from one or more carpels. Each carpel possesses a stigma, with a style and an ovary (not seen). The stigma is covered in projections known as papillae (green). These trap pollen grains (yellow) that contain the male sex cells. If the male cells fertilise the female sex cells (ovules) in the ovary, the carpel may ripen to produce a fruit containing seeds. Magnification: x140 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a pea flower stigma. The coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the surface of this common or garden pea flower (Pisum sativum) stigma, which is an essential part of its female reproductive structure. Formed from one or more carpels, each possessing a stigma, style, and ovary (not visible in the image), this delicate pistil plays a crucial role in plant reproduction. The stigma's surface is adorned with numerous papillae, depicted here in vibrant green. These tiny projections serve as traps for pollen grains containing male sex cells represented by their striking yellow coloration. The fertilization process occurs when these male cells successfully unite with the female sex cells known as ovules within the ovary. If successful, this union can lead to the ripening of the carpel and eventually result in fruit production with viable seeds. At a magnification level of x140 on a 6x7cm size scale, this SEM image provides us with an up-close look at nature's remarkable design. It highlights not only the structural complexity but also emphasizes how even seemingly small details like papillae play significant roles in plant reproduction. This stunning photograph serves as a reminder that beneath our feet lies an extraordinary world filled with intricate mechanisms and breathtaking beauty waiting to be explored.
