EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic map print, created by Colonel Vasilii Petrovich Piadyshev in 1820, offers a detailed and intricate view of Pskov Province in Russia. The map is an extract from the larger work, "Geograficheskii atlas Rossiiskoi imperii, tsarstva Pol'skogo i velikogo kniazhestva Finliandskogo" (Geographical atlas of the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Poland, and the Grand Duchy of Finland), which comprised 60 maps of the Russian Empire. Piadyshev's meticulous work showcases the extensive mapping efforts carried out by Russian military cartographers during the first quarter of the 19th century. The map displays various population centers, categorized into five gradations based on size, postal stations, roads, state, provincial, and district borders, and monasteries. Distances are denoted in versts, a traditional Russian measurement equivalent to approximately 1.07 kilometers. The map's rich detail includes legends and place-names in both Russian and French, reflecting the international reach and influence of the Russian Empire during this period. The four types of roads are clearly marked, with postal roads indicated by a double line and horseshoes, while major roads are denoted by a single line. This fascinating glimpse into the past offers valuable insights into the geography, infrastructure, and administrative divisions of Pskov Province during the early 19th century.
