Two views of the human spine
Two views of the human spine. This computer artwork shows a side (lateral) view (left) and an front (anterior) view (right). From top to bottom, the human spine consists of 7 cervical vertebrae, 12 thoracic vertebrae, 5 lumbar vertebrae, 5 fused sacral vertebrae, and 3-5 fused coccygeal vertebrae. Intervertebral discs (brown) form joints between vertebrae, allowing for slight movement and cushioning against impact. The discs consist of an outer layer of fibrous and cartilaginous tissue and a jelly-like centre

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases two distinct views of the human spine, providing a comprehensive understanding of its intricate structure. On the left, we are presented with a side or lateral view, while on the right, an anterior or front view is depicted. The human spine is composed of various vertebrae that stack upon each other from top to bottom. Starting at the topmost section, there are seven cervical vertebrae followed by twelve thoracic vertebrae and five lumbar vertebrae. The lower portion consists of five fused sacral vertebrae and three to five fused coccygeal vertebrae. Intervertebral discs play a crucial role in connecting these individual vertebral bones, enabling slight movement and acting as shock absorbers against impact. These discs possess an outer layer made up of fibrous and cartilaginous tissue surrounding a jelly-like center. Through this computer artwork's meticulous detailing, viewers gain valuable insights into the skeletal structure that supports our bodies. Its scientific significance lies in aiding anatomical comparisons and enhancing our knowledge about spinal anatomy. This remarkable image serves as a testament to Science Photo Library's commitment to delivering exceptional visual resources for educational purposes across various disciplines such as biology and anatomy without any commercial intent involved.
