Used dental floss, SEM
Used dental floss. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of dental plaque on strands of used dental floss. Plaque consists of a film of bacteria embedded in a glycoprotein matrix. The matrix is formed from bacterial secretions and saliva. Plaque is the main cause of tooth decay. The bacteria feed on sugars in food, producing acid as a waste product. This acid corrodes the teeths enamel coating, resulting in dental caries. A build-up of dental plaque can also lead to inflamed and infected gums. Severe gum disease can lead to teeth falling out. Magnification: x1050 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of dental plaque, as seen through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image captures strands of used dental floss adorned with a vibrant array of colored bacterial biofilm. Dental plaque, composed of bacteria embedded in a glycoprotein matrix formed by secretions and saliva, is notorious for being the primary culprit behind tooth decay. As we consume sugars in our diet, these bacteria feed on them and produce acid as a byproduct. Over time, this corrosive acid erodes the protective enamel coating on our teeth, leading to dental caries or cavities. Moreover, an accumulation of dental plaque can also result in inflamed and infected gums. In severe cases, gum disease can progress to such an extent that it causes teeth to loosen and eventually fall out. At a magnification level of x1050 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this SEM image provides us with an up-close look at the microscopic subjects responsible for oral health disorders. It serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene practices such as regular brushing and flossing to prevent the formation and progression of dental plaque-related conditions.
