Sea floor spreading, artwork
Sea floor spreading. Artwork showing three stages in the process of sea floor spreading. The process takes millions of years and it is the process by which the continents move over the Earth. The first stage (top) occurs when underground forces (red arrows) pull the overlying crust apart. A shallow sea has formed between the volcanic plate margins. In the second stage (middle), the fracture zone has formed into a mid-ocean ridge with underwater volcanoes. At this ridge, molten rock from below the Earths crust is forming new sea floor. At bottom, the underwater volcanoes have formed new land above the sea along the ridge. This occurs if the rate of volcanism exceeds the speed of the sea floor spreading

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork titled "Sea Floor Spreading" beautifully captures the intricate process by which continents move over the Earth's surface. Through a series of three stages, spanning millions of years, this print showcases the dynamic nature of our planet. In the first stage depicted at the top, underground forces exert their power and pull apart the overlying crust. This action creates a fracture zone where a shallow sea begins to form between volcanic plate margins. The second stage, shown in the middle, reveals how this fracture zone transforms into a mid-ocean ridge adorned with underwater volcanoes. Molten rock from beneath Earth's crust rises to form new sea floor along this ridge. Finally, at the bottom of this stunning artwork, we witness how these underwater volcanoes give birth to new land above sea level along the ridge. This remarkable phenomenon occurs when the rate of volcanism surpasses that of sea floor spreading. Through meticulous modeling and illustration techniques, Science Photo Library has brought forth an awe-inspiring representation of this geological marvel. The 3D cut-away design allows us to delve deep into Earth's physical geography and explore its hidden secrets. With elements such as magma upwelling, tectonic plate boundaries, and continental drift expertly portrayed in this piece, it serves as both an educational tool for earth sciences enthusiasts and a visually striking work of art for all who appreciate natural wonders.
