Russian heatwave, summer 2010

Russian heatwave, July 2010. This world satellite map shows global land surface temperature anomalies in the period from 28 July to 4 August 2010, as compared to the same period in the years 2000 to 2008. Red indicates hotter temperatures and blue indicates cooler temperatures. The extremes (dark blue and dark red) were twelve degrees Celsius cooler and hotter. The most prominent feature here is the dark orange area in western Russia. Extensive wildfires broke out here during the Northern Hemisphere heatwave. Data obtained by the MODIS sensor on NASAs Terra satellite

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the devastating Russian heatwave that occurred during the summer of 2010. The world satellite map depicts land surface temperature anomalies between July 28 and August 4, compared to previous years from 2000 to 2008. The color spectrum ranges from blue indicating cooler temperatures to red representing hotter temperatures, with dark blue and dark red signifying extreme differences of twelve degrees Celsius. The most striking feature on this map is the large dark orange area in western Russia, which experienced extensive wildfires during this period of intense heat. Data collected by NASA's Terra satellite using the MODIS sensor reveals the severity of these fires that ravaged vast areas in northern hemisphere regions. This image provides a glimpse into our planet's climatological challenges in the twenty-first century. It serves as a powerful reminder of how global warming and climate change can lead to catastrophic events such as this unprecedented heatwave. Through its depiction from space, this satellite image offers valuable insights into meteorological patterns and geographical phenomena affecting our planet. It highlights both the fragility and resilience of Earth's ecosystems while emphasizing the urgent need for proactive measures to mitigate future occurrences like these wildfires. Science Photo Library has once again captured an extraordinary moment frozen in time, reminding us of nature's awe-inspiring power and prompting us to reflect on humanity's role in shaping our environment.
